“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:10)
You know the saying — there is no ‘I’ in team, meaning everyone needs to work together to be successful. I believe that being a Christian works much the same way. Still, we often forget that we cannot always do what we want, at least not on our own, in order to thrive. Take a baseball team, for example. The pitcher can throw many strikes but if the first base man isn’t in place, he can’t stop the player who hits the ball from getting on base. On the other hand, the guy who gets on base means nothing if there is no one behind him hitting the ball to get him home.
The same team principles apply to hockey and soccer. While it may be awesome to have a great goalie, the goalie can only stop so many shots if there are other players in front of the net. Therefore, one man can’t win a hockey game in isolation from his or her teammates. He needs the guys in front of him to go after the puck and score goals.
I like to use the same analogy for being a parent. It’s possible to parent children all by yourself, but it’s so much better when you engage a network of people behind you for support. Those people can contribute to your team whether they are family, friends, or coworkers. These supporting folks can be there helping out when parents need them most. In this type of scenario, very few people parent all by themselves.
As a Christian, some of us tend to go it alone. The problem is that without backups and supports, the enemy can come into our lives and wreak havoc. In fact, the enemy will shoot as many pucks as he can to put holes in your faith, to break you down one shot at a time. The effort will be to ensure that our defence is not in place. Indeed, satan loves the goalie who remains all by himself, defending his faith. Why? Because the enemy loves the guy stuck on first base with no one to bat him home. The enemy’s motive is to seek and destroy, devouring Christians.
However, as Christian, we know that we can’t have faith without GOD. We can’t be Christians without the Word to be our sword and shield. We can’t survive the endless barrage of garbage life throws our way if we don’t have FAITH as a son or daughter of the Most High King. Admittedly, even Christians are different. My biggest supports in my Christian faith have always been through music, mainly worship. I pray and read my Bible and I’m surrounded by people who believe and trust in Jesus, but the right song puts a step in my heart unlike a person in a pulpit.
My advice is to seek to find out which ‘team’ works best for you. You don’t need a whole hockey or football team on your side. A simple baseball team with committed players may be just enough to succeed. This is why we can be assured that in the midst of two or three who love Jesus, there is Jesus in the midst. Therefore, keep your eyes on Jesus, because He is always the way to win 🙂
