Jesus Makes All the Difference!
One word from Jesus can make all the difference in our life. We understand this from reading the example presented in Luke chapter five. Therein, the people are pressing against Jesus who is preaching the good news gospel by the lake of Gennesaret. He saw two ships standing by the lake, observing that the fishermen had left the boats to wash their nets.
Jesus enters into Simon’s boat, and prayed that he would thrust the boat out a little from the land. In so doing, the people on the land could sit down on the shore and listen to Jesus’ teachings. When He was finished, Jesus said unto Simon, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.”
But Simon Peter and his companions, who had toiled all night fishing, catching nothing must have wondered at Jesus’ statement. They had already worked hard all night and their efforts had not even produced one fish. In fact, Simon could have complained about Jesus’ request. Or for that matter, rejected Jesus’ request. After all, Simon was tired, having already worked all night.
But as we see from Luke 5:5, Simon’s response was revealing. He admitted, “Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing” but “nevertheless, at Thy word, I will let down the net.”
In other words, when Jesus told Simon to give it one more try, he willingly listened. He willingly responded to the words of the Master.
“Nevertheless, at Thy word, I will let down the net.” And when he did, what happened?
The scriptures state: “And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes, and their net broke. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came and filled both the ships …”
You see, when one willingly seeks Jesus, and His righteousness, we are no longer the ones carrying the burden. We no longer have to toil endlessly, coming up empty handed every time. Rather, just like Simon, we need to trust our Lord God and Saviour for all our needs. Jesus said:
“Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28-29)
Therefore, don’t get caught in the needless entanglements of this world. Instead, “cast thy burden(s) upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” (Psalms 55:22)
Jesus — the same yesterday, today and forever — never fails. Trust in Jesus today.
