Comfort

“I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.” (John 14:18)

Tonight I sat down to unwind after another busy weekend. My husband is watching The Lawrence Welk show (he is strange ;)) Then, suddenly, on the show came the song The Old Rugged Cross. It brought back many memories.  As a child we regularly sang this song in church. The words for this song and others, could be found in the red hymnals placed on the seats or hanging on the back of pews. I am sure it has been more than a decade since I have heard the song. Not because I don’t listen to Christian music (because I almost always listen to Christian music) but because most churches I’ve attended sing more current praise and worship music.

So, I googled the song. What I discovered is that The Old Rugged Cross was written in 1912. Still, how powerful the words must be for listeners to still be loved over 100 years later. Apparently, over thirty musicians have recorded the song. Me? I truly enjoyed the version by Brad Paisley. Wow!!!

But now I dare you to read the words below out loud. Not just sing the song in your head but actually speak the words — good luck 😉 — and when you finish, read the words again. Take time to absorb how powerful this song is — even without the music. Once you’ve managed this seemingly simple task, listen to whatever version you like best on YouTube. Then sit back, close your eyes and listen intently to the words. I guarantee that once you’ve listened to The Old Rugged Cross with all your heart, soul and mind, you will never be the same!

 THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

On a hill far away, stood an old rugged Cross The emblem of suff’ring and shame And I love that old Cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged Cross And exchange it some day for a crown

Oh, that old rugged Cross so despised by the world Has a wondrous attraction for me For the dear Lamb of God, left his Glory above To bear it to dark Calvary

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged Cross And exchange it some day for a crown

In the old rugged Cross, stain’d with blood so divine A wondrous beauty I see For the dear Lamb of God, left His Glory above To pardon and sanctify me

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged Cross And exchange it some day for a crown

To the old rugged Cross, I will ever be true Its shame and reproach gladly bear Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away

Where His glory forever I’ll share
So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged Cross

And exchange it some day for a crown
Thank you Jesus, for dying on the cross for me. Thank you for shedding your precious blood so that I could have life. Thank you Jesus for bringing me peace, joy, and contentment. Thank you Jesus for always being there with me.
