Easter is So Much More Than Bunnies and Eggs!
“And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33)
Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He’s coming
Oh glorious day, oh glorious day
This is the chorus to one of my most favourite songs by Casting Crowns and since Easter is approaching, I believe it is equally appropriate as well.
Easter is the number two overly commercialized religious holiday of the year — after Christmas. For the last week, I’ve heard about the things people buy their kids, as well as the excuses for why they buy them. I’ve seen pictures of how the eggs will be decorated. The shelves in the stores are slowly emptying of all the yummy treats. The Easter egg hunt plans are in place. Not one person has mentioned in the hustle and bustle that it’s the time of year to focus on WHO Easter is about. That is, Jesus.
I’m not sure outside of the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ that there are more celebrated holidays in the calendar. Christmas and Easter, both amazing on their own are being corrupted and forgotten by non believers and turned into secular holidays. Why are we allowing this to happen?!?!
I don’t think other religions in the world would let society destroy the meaning behind their holidays. So why then, should Christian holidays be any different??? Why does the death and resurrection of Jesus get lost in a hunt for eggs and chocolate bunnies??? And why has His birth been taken over by flying reindeer and a guy in a red suit?
Yes, every year I hide a few eggs. And when my son was younger, I bought him his rubber boots, raincoat and the coolest chocolate bunny I could find. My parents did this when I was younger as well. Still, I knew the meaning of Easter. I knew that Easter is all about Jesus.
I knew that living is because Jesus loved us and encouraged us to fully experience His grace, love and forgiveness.
I knew that in dying, Jesus saved us…..that He hung on a cross, was tortured and yet He did it so that we could have everything He promised us while living.
I knew that in being buried, Jesus was blotting away all of our sins.
Do you know how much more amazing that is!!!!!
And yes, in raising from the dead, He gave us eternal FREEDOM. Jesus gave us His everlasting love and life — and peace that passes all human understanding.
So this weekend, make it not about a bunny and chocolate. Try sharing the good news about a Saviour who not only loved us but died for us as well Make it about celebrating all that He gave up, so we could embrace His blessings.
And thank Him for it. Why? Because Easter isn’t about a bunny — it’s about our Heavenly Father.
