Choosing to Parent

Train up a child in the way he should go…. do not provoke your children to anger… show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works… this is what the Bible says about parenting.  These are just a few examples of what God tells us when we choose to go forth and multiply.   He doesn’t give us an option.  He doesn’t say we should try, he says to do it. Be a model for them because they will learn more from your actions then they will ever learn from your words.

So how do we do this?  In a world where we constantly pay other people to watch our children, educate our children, and play with them, how do we train them up in the way they should go?  We purposely parent.  We find the time to sit and pray with them, we read the Bible before we turn on the tv, we teach them that admitting failure is more important then hiding behind a lie.  We keep our focus completely on Jesus so that when they look at us they see Him.

It’s hard though isn’t it?  It’s hard to be that example.  It’s hard to admit the failures we have made because this world is ALWAYS ready to condemn us… there is no grace in our world.  It’s a rat race to the cheese.  Do more.  Have more.  Be more.  There is no limit to what is enough, there is no stopping or slowing down.

Today I stopped.  Today I slowed down.  Do you know what?  It felt so so amazing.  Today I just watched them beating their sticks against the snow while the sun shines.  I spent time watching her little belly rise and fall with every breath as she naps.  There was no goal today, no list of acheivements, no rewards… we are just enjoying being alive.

I am blessed to be a stay at home parent.  We homeschool as well so I have the awesome opportunity to spend our days together instead of sending them off to school so these moments come more often for us but if we do not make the choice every day to parent them as God intended them to be parented then it doesn’t matter if we are stay at home parents or working parents because we will find a way to fill up our days with meaningless things.  We have to be purposeful in our parenting.  We have to find a way to take the time to enjoy the little things, to get back to what matters.

Show them grace, show yourself grace because it doesn’t matter if the world condemns us for our God has already conquered the world and if He is willing to go before us and make our path straight, the least we can do is follow Him, right?
