I look forward to many things throughout my day. I look forward to having lunch, because I generally enjoy food, as most people do. I look forward to talking to my wife after work and hearing about her day, whether good or bad. Matthew 6:20-21 says, “But lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth not corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”. This verse goes on to say that you are affected directly by that which you are fixated on.
In our culture today, media is such a driving force for what our focus is. We are constantly bombarded with billboards, internet pop-ups, radio advertisements etc. Everything we see is geared towards making us want that very thing, convincing us that we need to have it.
“By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life” Proverbs 22:4
When I read that passage I think, there is nothing more honorable, there is nothing more valuable than humility and fear of the Lord. This IS the meaning of life, to humble ourselves before Christ our Saviour. Is the very reason for our existence. Fear of the Lord is something I have struggled to understand over the years. I feel that we should fear God in the same way a son fears his father. You don’t or shouldn’t fear the Father but the consequence of your words and actions. Matthew 12:36 says, “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement.”
