Happy Canada Day

This past weekend our amazing country celebrated our beginning.  I didn’t take much time to think about it because to me it meant a three day weekend for my husband!  It meant that I was going to pack, load, shop, clean, pack, reload, clean again, and finally head on our way to the province of beaches and golf courses.  It was going to be a weekend of fun in the sun!  And it was.

We spent the entire day Friday either in the water or in the sand.  It was thirty degrees and the sun was hot without a cloud in the sky.  Ten little kids from 7 years to 6 months ran all around us and it was fantastic.

Saturday was visiting, a BBQ on the wharf and a trip to the dairy bar where those bellies were filled with vanilla ice cream and sprinkles.  Bedtime came with happy hearts, full bellies and sticky hands.

Sunday was parade day and fireworks!  Another gorgeous day but the wind was much cooler.  More visiting and treats led to sugar highs and laughter.

It was perfect.  It was fun.  It was worth celebrating.

As I thought about it tonight though, I realized that the awesome memories that were made this weekend is not of my own doing.  Sure, my husband packed the van, I brought the kids to the fun places, and I was responsible for making sure everything was organized so we could do these things, but the reason we could do them had nothing to do with either of us.  It had to do with those who came before us. Those people who literally walked the road not traveled.

Our history is not always good.  In fact there are many, many shameful moments in the history of Canada.  We can see how our country has made mistakes and how it continues to make mistakes but we also see how it has overcome the challenges.  It is a great country.

It is failing though.  We have removed God from so much that made our country great, and everyday we continue to remove Him from more things.  It is this, that I fear will be our downfall.  The more babies we kill, the more prayers we stop, the more times we say God is not welcome here… it seems that with each step we take away from God another gun is brought into school, the financial crisis gets worse, and the very foundation of our being is rocked.

Our country was based on Biblical principals and I am sad to see more and more of those principals erased because everybody has a right but nobody has a responsibility.  We can do better but we do that through prayer and action.  We use our voice to come against those who want to knock us down.

So Happy Canada Day!  I am thankful for those Christians who have walked before me who have made this country the great place it is to live.  I pray that I will go boldly in my beliefs that I can stand against those who want to take away our rights… the rights of those who worked so hard to establish them.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
